Jude, who was a brother of Jesus, wrote his letter to Christians who were under pressure from ungodly practices and beliefs. It is unique in its connection of the behavior denounced by Jude with the same errors that had previously occurred in the Corinthian church. Guy believes that it is long overdue for Christians to wake up to the accommodation of much of the Western church to the same errors that Jude denounced. Like Jude, he is encouraging Christians in the modern church to promote biblical principles in a world where the gospel of Jesus Christ is being marginalized.
Jude is placed in his historical context: a Jewish author in the second half of the first century AD, who wishes to warn members of the early Jesus movement against Intruders in their midst and prevent those believers’ deviation from the fundamental tenets of ‘the faith’. This commentary uses what Professor Tom Schreiner describes as ‘a historical approach,’ whereby he states, ‘I believe that the goal of interpretation is to pursue the author’s intention.’ Even though a small book in size (only twenty-five verses), Jude speaks as authoritatively as any other book in the NT.
Jude reminds us of Paul’s warning to Timothy: ‘For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance with their own desires.’ (2 Tim. 4:3).
In his condemnation of the Intruders, Jude’s language is stronger than that of anyone else in the NT, except, perhaps, for Jesus himself. With today’s obsession about political correctness in everything said or written, so that no one suffers any distress or takes any offence, Jude’s tone may seem rather strong to some. However, it is a breath of fresh air when someone speaks biblical truth plainly. In the words of T. H. Huxley, ‘The necessity of making things plain to uninstructed people was one of the very best means of clearing up the obscure corners in one’s own mind.’ Jude had no doubt that the Intruders of whom he wrote faced certain doom because of their actions and words.
This book is written for Christian men and women: but especially to men.
For far too long, men have failed to be men.
They have deserted their God given place in creation, their families, the Church and society. They have been fooled by phoney philosophies about finding their ‘feminine side’ and preoccupied by conforming to politically correct notions about the role of men (and women) in twenty-first century society. One of the major contributors to the present confusion in the Church and society in general about gender status and roles is the unwillingness of most men to speak up—at all! Men have been frightened into silence, which is, to some extent, their inherent nature when dealing with women, particularly their wives.
It is now time to replace wrong ideas about gender issues with a biblical understanding. Christian men must regain their rightful place as upholders of decency, virtue, integrity and honour in today’s families, Church and broken world. Christian women need to be faithfully supporting men and contributing to a Christ centred world using their God given gifts. Women play a critical role in helping men to be men—primarily by being the type of women that God created them to be.
While women may find this book useful in understanding men (and themselves), there is a more urgent need for men to understand themselves, their world and their role in it. This book will assist Christians to understand the created uniqueness that belongs to each of them. A return to God ordained roles, privileges and responsibilities would enable Christian men and women to have an effect on the Church, and society in general, comparable to that of the early Christians, a tiny minority group that ‘turned the world upside down’ (Acts 17:6, RSV)
Guy’s employment involved finance in a wide range of activities: the Reserve Bank of Australia (including personal assistant to the Governor), commercial and investment banks in economics and foreign exchange, as treasurer of large companies in Australia and New Zealand, an independent financial consultant to major Australian corporations and in financial regulation at the Australian Securities and Investments Commission.
He authored the university textbook Floating Down Under: Foreign Exchange in Australia in 1986. His academic qualifications include a BA in economics (Macquarie University), MCom (University of New South Wales), LLM (JD) (Monash University) and a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice (College of Law, Melbourne).
Reflecting his longstanding interest in early Christianity, he gained an MA in Early Christian and Jewish Studies from Macquarie University in 2000. Now retired from active employment, he has more time to undertake research and writing on biblical themes.
