The Letter of Jude: A Wake-up Call to Christians in the Twenty-first Century

Jude, who was a brother of Jesus, wrote his letter to Christians who were under pressure from ungodly practices and beliefs. It is unique in its connection of the behavior denounced by Jude with the same errors that had previously occurred in the Corinthian church. Guy believes that it is long overdue for Christians to wake up to the accommodation of much of the Western church to the same errors that Jude denounced. Like Jude, he is encouraging Christians in the modern church to promote biblical principles in a world where the gospel of Jesus Christ is being marginalized.

Jude is placed in his historical context: a Jewish author in the second half of the first century AD, who wishes to warn members of the early Jesus movement against Intruders in their midst and prevent those believers’ deviation from the fundamental tenets of ‘the faith’. This commentary uses what Professor Tom Schreiner describes as ‘a historical approach,’ whereby he states, ‘I believe that the goal of interpretation is to pursue the author’s intention.’ Even though a small book in size (only twenty-five verses), Jude speaks as authoritatively as any other book in the NT.

Jude reminds us of Paul’s warning to Timothy: ‘For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance with their own desires.’ (2 Tim. 4:3).

In his condemnation of the Intruders, Jude’s language is stronger than that of anyone else in the NT, except, perhaps, for Jesus himself. With today’s obsession about political correctness in everything said or written, so that no one suffers any distress or takes any offence, Jude’s tone may seem rather strong to some. However, it is a breath of fresh air when someone speaks biblical truth plainly. In the words of T. H. Huxley, ‘The necessity of making things plain to uninstructed people was one of the very best means of clearing up the obscure corners in one’s own mind.’ Jude had no doubt that the Intruders of whom he wrote faced certain doom because of their actions and words.

Reviews for The Letter of Jude

Biblical exegesis and theology are not disciplining solely for academic scholars. In this commentary on Jude, Guy Manuell shows how someone active in church life and a businessman, can apply himself to commenting on the Greek text of a New Testament book. This he does with competence and freshness, and is able to apply it in a manner often missing in commentaries. He is able to show how relevant the book of Jude is for the contemporary church. Wide reading has enriched his study, and now his commentary is going to be a stimulus to others as they approach Jude.
Dr. Allan M. Harman
Research Professor of Old Testament, Presbyterian Theological College, Melbourne, Australia
This deeply researched and briskly argued study does not limit itself to describing Jude’s meaning for its first-century readers. It is equally concerned with calling attention to “a cancer that is ravaging the body of Christ” today. Making creative comparison between ills addressed in Jude and problems evident in Paul’s Corinth, Guy Manuell furnishes an exposition of Jude that enlightens, provokes, encourages, challenges, and most of all instructs. It interprets a pastoral letter with pastoral insight yet scholarly grasp of Jude’s language, historical setting, and contemporary interpretation. I recommend it highly for those who teach and preach in the church, as well as for any others who are willing to see the desperate decadence of our times (including, often, in churches) and the glory of God’s call to repentance and godly living through the true faith in the Lord Jesus Christ whom Jude exalts, serves, and pungently proclaims.’
Dr. Robert W. Yarbrough
Professor of New Testament, Covenant Theological Seminary, St. Louis, Missouri, USA
Guy Manuell takes us on a deep but guided tour of the all too often neglected Letter of Jude. With an eye constantly on Jude’s historical setting, and a desire to spell out the social and cultural implications of the letter today, Manuell makes judicious use of scholarship in opening up God’s word. While clearly based on his reading of the Greek text, he presents his conclusions in a way that can be easily followed by non- specialists. Not interested in merely rehashing previous views, this commentary presents serious readers with a thought-provoking interaction with Jude.’

Guy Manuell is helpfully attentive to the distinctive features of Jude’s literary style. It is a useful resource for personal Bible study, for Bible study leaders, and for preachers.

About The Books

Gender Wars in Christianity

This book is written for Christian men and women: but especially to men.

For far too long, men have failed to be men.

They have deserted their God given place in creation, their families, the Church and society. They have been fooled by phoney philosophies about finding their ‘feminine side’ and preoccupied by conforming to politically correct notions about the role of men (and women) in twenty-first century society. One of the major contributors to the present confusion in the Church and society in general about gender status and roles is the unwillingness of most men to speak up—at all! Men have been frightened into silence, which is, to some extent, their inherent nature when dealing with women, particularly their wives.

It is now time to replace wrong ideas about gender issues with a biblical understanding. Christian men must regain their rightful place as upholders of decency, virtue, integrity and honour in today’s families, Church and broken world. Christian women need to be faithfully supporting men and contributing to a Christ centred world using their God given gifts. Women play a critical role in helping men to be men—primarily by being the type of women that God created them to be.

While women may find this book useful in understanding men (and themselves), there is a more urgent need for men to understand themselves, their world and their role in it. This book will assist Christians to understand the created uniqueness that belongs to each of them. A return to God ordained roles, privileges and responsibilities would enable Christian men and women to have an effect on the Church, and society in general, comparable to that of the early Christians, a tiny minority group that ‘turned the world upside down’ (Acts 17:6, RSV)

Reviews of Gender Wars in Christianity

In our day, one of Satan’s most effective strategies to undermine God’s intentions for relationships is to foster confusion about gender identity and roles. Our culture desperately needs a strong voice to declare a biblical understanding of what it means to bear God’s image as male and female, and to reveal that image by how we live and relate. Manuell’s book on Gender Wars provides that voice. His thorough dependence on Scripture issues a call the church must heed.

Guy Manuell has produced a thoughtful and valuable defence of biblical complementarianism which, at the same time, highlights the dangers of rejecting or distorting the Bible’s teaching about the equality and differences between men and women. His challenge to husbands in particular – to avoid the pitfalls of both abdication and domination – is timely. More than that, he is right to link the gender wars in the church with the battle over the authority of Scripture.
Robert S. Smith
Lecturer in Theology and Ethics, Sydney Missionary & Bible College
This is a systematic, thorough and thoughtful examination of the roles of men and women within creation, marriage and the Church viewed from a careful biblical perspective. It demands close attention by Christians today.
Richard Wheeler
Fellow & Council Member, Sydney College of Divinity
Guy Manuell has painstakingly negotiated a theological and sociological minefield to deliver a biblical and logical apologetic on the gender issue. The book is highly readable and obviously the product of considerable research. A strong feature is his strong Trinitarian argument in dealing with submission vis-à- vis inferiority and Jesus’ sonship being from eternity and not from creation..
